Tata Motors Not Stopping Indica And Sumo

Reports earlier had stated that Tata Motors preferred to build more fuel efficient and modern cars such as the the Indica eV2. The Indica and Sumo are cars that are preferred highly by taxi operators across the country. But the arrival of better models have taken some sheen out of these two cars. Reports also stated Tata Motors was planning to move production of some of its models to its Sanand plant where it builds the Nano small car.
Responding to these media reports, Tata Motors head of corporate communications Debasis Ray has stated that Tata Motors has no plans to discontinue either the Tata Indica or the Tata Sumo. He went on to say that Tata Motors will continuously refresh its portfolio of models but would not stop any of them in the immediate future.
Further clarifying the company's stand on building its passenger cars in Sanand, Mr Ray has said the Sanand plant will be an exclusive Tata Nano plant and no other car will be built there. Tata Motors will continue to build its other passenger cars at its plant near Pune.
The Tata Nano plant has a capacity to build about 20,000 units per month while the carmaker has managed to sell just over 10,000 units in March 2012. This lead to speculations that Tata Motors wanted to use the unused capacity at the Sanand plant to build other cars.
Carmakers usually discontinue building under performing or old cars. Tata Motors has also stopped building the Siera and Estate. These decisions are made considering the profitability of individual models.
