Is This Hyundai's Duster, EcoSport Fighter?
The Ford EcoSport appears to be Hyundai's target as it has asked its Brazilian division to develop a compact SUV under the ix35. Ford will sell the EcoSport in India as well as in Brazil. Hyundai's compact SUV will be based on a new compact car platform and is expected to be a five door car. Details about this compact SUV were leaked during Hyundai's unveiling of the new 2013 Santa Fe.
Hyundai Motors will initially develop this compact SUV for the Brazilian market and then sell it across the globe. India might be one of the first markets to get it after Brazil as the compact SUV segment is still in its nascent stage and a model launch will create a foothold for Hyundai in the segment. Hyundai had earlier said that this car was being developed for Brazil alone but one cannot discount the fact that India is the fastest growing car market and any new model can be a success if packaged well.
The concept car that is closest in terms of design to the Hyundai compact SUV is the ix-onic displayed at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. Hyundai will have to keep the price of its compact SUV very intelligently too. With car prices increasing and fuel prices also not showing any signs of dropping, people will be vary of buying expensive cars.
If Hyundai manages to bring its compact SUV to India soon, we will definitely see a race for supremacy I the segment between the Ford EcoSport, Renault Duster and Hyundai's new car. But we must also consider other carmakers will also launch new models in this segment in the coming years adding to the competition.
