Bajaj RE60 - AutoRickshaw With Four Wheels

Bajaj RE 60
The Bajaj RE60 is the latest entrant in to the cheap car segment in India. But as Rajiv Bajaj, the Managing director of Bajaj auto would say, it is not a car but a four wheeler. In simple terms the Bajaj RE60 is an auto with four wheels. The boss of India's second largest two wheeler manufacturer has categorically stated the RE60's name is based on the the company's popular three wheeler, the Bajaj RE. Hence there is no argument about the fact that the RE60 is just an auto with an extra wheel and its not car.

This statement safely keeps the RE60 out of the Tata Nano territory. But its initial pricing will surely be similar to the Tata Motors People's car. Will this mean there should be a comparison? Well, if price is the only point of consideration, the Tata Nano and the Bajaj RE60 can be compared. But do bear in mind we are comparing a car and a four wheeler (whatever difference do these two have?)

The Bajaj RE60 is built on a platform that can be used to build a car or even a three wheeler, while the Nano's platform has been specially designed to suit the needs of a cheap yet efficient car. The RE60 is powered by a 200cc rear mounted DTSi engine (may be picked from the Pulsar 200). It can churn out 14 to 15bhp which is quite decent for a motorcycle but definitely not enough for a car. The Tata Nano on the other hand has a 650cc engine that generates enough power to take it to a top speed of 80kmph. The RE60 according the Bajaj auto can reach speeds up to 70kmph.

The looks department is something the RE60 does not need to compete. The Tata Nano is by far a better looking car while the RE60 just about manages to be presentable and nothing else. Some might even call this ugly but you cannot argue with them. Looks apart, the RE60 can be a decent urban travel option. Its small size will help it traverse through narrow city lanes with ease but its under powered engine will not help it get past signals quickly enough.

Mr Rajiv Bajaj has stated that the RE60 will make its market debut in Sri Lanka and not in India. He justified his decision by stating that more than 90 per cent of the autos the company sells in Sri Lanka were used for personal transportation and the new vehicle would definitely suit this bill. He went on to say the RE60 could be the perfect alternative to the slightly wobbly and unstable auto rickshaws. He expects the entire fleet of rickshaws to be replaced by the new RE60. That's quite ambitious, but we can never say how the Indian consumer will react to a low cost product.
