Renault To Build Sub Rs.4 Lakh Car Soon

Mr Nassif who launched the recently unveiled Pulse hatchback stated that more than 50% of the cars sold in India were within the Rs.2 lakhs to Rs.4 lakhs range and Renault also wanted to take some of the action. He said: “ Beyond Rs 4 lakh a car is our playing ground today (in India). We project to go below Rs 4 lakh."
Renault will be developing this new small car not exclusively to the Indian market. The car is actually part of a global strategy. While many were thinking Renault's low cost car would be the one developed by Bajaj Auto, Mr Nassif's statement clearly indicated the carmaker is planning to develop a car by itself.
It was previously believed Renault and Nissan would be selling the low cast four wheeler developed by Bajaj. But after the Bajaj RE 60 was unveiled, it is very clear that both Renault and Nissan are no longer interested in the Bajaj product.
Meanwhile Mr Nassif has stated his company was aiming to sell one lakh cars in India. However, he also added this target could be achieved only after Renault had at least five models along with 100 showrooms in India. This could happen either in 2013 or in 2014. The low cost car will have to make a major contribution for Renault India to achieve its sales target.
