Nissan Motor, the Japanese carmaker is reportedly planning to revive and launch its low cost car brand Datsun in emerging markets such as India. Japanese newspaper Nikkei has reported that Nissan was planning to revive the Datsun brand especially for countries such a India where demand for low cost cars is higher.

Nissan is aiming to become one of the leading carmakers of the world along with Renault. It intends to sell as many as 3 lakh Datsun cars per month. Although it has a sizable presence in emerging markets, it is still considered slightly up market when compared to brands such as Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki in India.

According to the Nikkei report Nissan will be building Datsun branded cars in India and exporting to other emerging markets. The plan to launch a low cost brand instead of building cheap cars under Nissan will help protect Nissan's brand image while still improving sales.

Nissan has not made any official statement with regard to launching Datsun in India. However it has not denied that it wants to build a car that is cheaper than the Micra. While Nissan will build models that cater to the global car buyer, Datsun is expected to offer models that are tailor made for individual car markets.
