Volvo to Build Cheaper Cars For India

Volvo S60
Swedish carmaker Volvo has decided to develop cheaper cars specially for the Indian market. The carmaker is considering to remove some of the expensive standard features in some of its models so that they are more affordable to Indian buyers.

Tomas Ernberg, the newly appointed managing director of Volvo Auto India Pvt. Ltd said: “We may consider developing corporate versions by removing some of the features we offer on our models."

Volvo will definitely get a positive results if it launches stripped down versions of its models in India. With most of its cars being priced either equal or more than luxury car models from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi, Volvo was struggling to gain a market share.

Volvo is following German luxury carmaker BMW.BMW had previously launched a cheaper variant of the 3-Series. The 3-Series is currently BMW's highest selling model in India.

Volvo is facing another pricing disadvantage in India as it does not assemble its cars here in India while its rivals BMW, Audi and Mercedes have established manufacturing plants. Volvo is currently selling the S60 sedan and the XC60, XC90 SUVs.
