Will Volvo Manufacturing Plant Come To India?

By By: Vicky.in

Volvo, the Swedish auto maker has said that for a manufacturing facility in India it has no instant plans as it is not economically feasible. Paul de Voijs, Managing Director, Volvo Auto India said that it was not viable to have a manufacturing facility for their luxury products. Geely Holding, which acquired Volvo from Ford, has no plans to touch the Swedish automaker's DNA.

Adding, the Chinese company was clear that it needs Volvo to be run by Volvo people, and it would not 'touch the Volvo DNA'. Volvo did not have 'any interference from Geely on how Volvo runs its business in India'. The Volvo India MD said that the company has no plans for the Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh segment as it would not be in sync with its image. However, it is looking for segments such as alternative fuel-powered car.

De Voijs said that electric cars would be introduced in India once the infrastructure is created and demand is felt. He added that he was positive the launch would be supported by lower duties. Volvo has been able to price cars competitively than to some of its competitors who manufacture luxury cars in India. Moreover, the luxury car segment was growing by 35 per cent yearly. Growth of Volvo India's was around 200 per cent, though this may be because of a lower base. And the company is positive to sell 400-600 cars during the year. It has sold 130 cars in the first three months and that was the same as last year's.
