Hands Free Driving - Volkswagen's Temporary Auto Pilot

Volkswagen Auto Pilot
German carmaker Volkswagen has developed the Temporary Auto Pilot (TAP), an automated driving technology that will let drivers take their hands off the wheel when needed. This new technology can be a vital development in preventing road accidents as distraction is one of the prime reasons for road accidents.

Volkswagen's Temporary Auto Pilot uses radar, laser, camera, and ultrasonic sensors to monitor it's position, the position of other cars, and upcoming obstacles to safely accelerate and slow down according to the sensors. The Auto Pilot can function up to speeds of up to 130km/h. However drivers need to be attentive as these are not fully automated. The system also observes overtaking rules and speed limits. Stop and start driving manoeuvres in traffic jams are also automated.

Although Volkswagen's Temporary Auto Pilot wont take you from point A to point B, it will definitely make driving a little easier. Drivers can take their hands off the steering while cruising down the highway at up to 130km/h. The TAP uses Lane Assist and cruise control to gauge the speed and distance between vehicles. Drivers can override the TAP at any time. The driver can set the speed at which the Auto Pilot should function.

Prof. Dr. JÜrgen Leohold, Executive Director Volkswagen Group Research who was instrumental in the development of the TAP said the company had achieved an important milestone towards accident free driving. This is one car accessory that buyers would prefer to have in their cars.

Software giant Google has developed fully automated car system that has been fitted to a Toyota Prius. The cars have travelled thousands of miles independently in California. New technologies to navigate cars are being developed constantly. If the growth of development continues in the same pace, self driving cars will not be to far away in the future.
