Tata Nano On Its Way To Pakistan

Tata Nano
If the plans of a Pakistan based business group are fruitful, the world's cheapest car, the Tata Nano will be running on Pakistani roads. The International Multi Group of Companies (IMCG), the Pakistani business house has evinced interest in importing the Nano in our neighbouring country. However the prevailing Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rules preventing any joint ventures or investments in Pakistan is proving to be a major hurdle.

IMCG has said it intends to import the Nano. The firm is also interested in importing Tata Motors' CNG powered buses. Pakistan's import policy resricting the number of imported vehicles has curtailed the import of these buses. IMGC Global Chairman Amjad Rashid said he had spoken to Indian commerce officials on RBI's restrictive policies and had sought their removal. Mr Rashid said his company had obtained a letter of intent from the Tata Motors regarding the Nano.

Tata officials had visited Pakistan two years ago and had held meetings with senior government officials. They had even offered to donate some CNG buses. However the deal fell through after terrorists targetted the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, owned by the Tatas, in Mumbai.

Mr Rashid has been bouyed by the recent increase of talks between India and Pakistan and he has also been part of the meetings held during Indian commerce secretary Khullar's visit to Pakistan. Pakistan considers India as a source of low cost technology and the Tata Nano is a prime example with a starting price tag of just Rs one lakh.
