Tata Nano Exports To Begin With Sri Lanka

Tata Motors is all set to export its low cost car, the Nano to Sri Lanka. Reports say the first batch of 500 Tata Nanos will be exported to the island nation shortly. This will be followed by a monthly supply of 200 Nanos. Tata Motors is trying to increase the presence of the Nano by exporting it to various countries.

The Tata Nano's export can be considered as a significant milestone for Tata as the carmaker was touting its small car was not just an affordable car but also as a vehicle that satisfies all the requirements of a car owner. The base version of the Tata Nano will cost Rs. 3.80 lakh or LKR 9.25 lakh in Sri Lanka while the higher end LX variant will cost Rs. 4.5 lakh or LKR 11 lakh. High import duties in Sri Lanka are the reason behind the Nano's high price tag. Diesel & Motor Engineering Plc (DIMO) is the official importer of the Nano.

Carl-Peter Forster, managing director and group CEO of the carmaker, said: “Tata Motors has already established a firm footprint in international markets. We will now scale up on this foundation, judiciously choosing appropriate geographies and addressing unmet consumer needs with our portfolio. The Tata Nano will play a major role in the next phase of growth of our international business."
