Tata Motors Responds To Mamata's Singur Bill

Tata Motors which had earlier refused to comment on the Singur issue has now said it had to abandon its plans to build the Tata Nano at Singur after facing several difficulties. It has accused the Bengal government of not stating the reasons behind the carmaker relocating the Nano plant to Gujarat.
It may be recalled that the Tata Nano plant in Singur faced heavy opposition from residents and farmers and it was followed by violent showdowns between protesters and Communist party members. When violence appeared to be going out of control Tata Motors decided to look for an alternative location for its Nano plant and set up its plant in Gujarat.
Tata Motors in its statement has said it had more than investment of Rs.1,800 crores and and its vendors had invested Rs.171 crores. The carmaker also said it had also undertaken several community development initiatives in Singur even before it started building its plant. Tata Motors added the decision to move the Nano plant in Singur to Gujarat was a painful one and insisted 10,000 jobs would be created if the plant had become operational.
