By Suparna Chakaraborthy

Imagine one buying a new luxury car of his dreams and it turns out to be a stolen one. According to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), a network of criminals were involved in importing stolen Rolls-Royces, Bentleys, Ferraris. Lamborghinis, Hummers and Aston Martins from Europe and South Africa as new and was selling them to innocent buyers. The DRI has said many high net worth individuals including bollywood stars, politicians, sports stars and businessmen could have bought stolen luxury cars.

The DRI has so far seized 40 such stolen luxury cars. Sumit Walias, a Delhi resident is said to head the syndicate that imported these cars. DRI officials said Mr Walia was on the run and was absconding. Luxury cars were bought buy Mr Walia from stolen car networks in Europe. Fake import papers and invoices were then prepared. While cars from the UK and Ireland were imported directly as they were right hand drive models, left hand drive cars from South Africa were first modified at Dubai before being imported to India.

DRI officials believe they have uncovered just a small part of the crime and expect 300 to 400 more stolen luxury cars to have been brought to India through clandestine means. In a shocking disclosure the DRI officials said they had seized a Rs 2 crore Aston Martin that was bought by a foreign embassy for a Indian client. They have questioned embassy officials as well as the buyer. DRI officials are also in touch with officials of countries from which these stolen vehicles were imported.

DRI officials do not rule out the possibility of car showrooms selling such stolen luxury cars as new. There might be several unsuspecting buyers who have been misled to buy such cars. If you are in any doubt that you have bought a stolen luxury car, or having an intention to buy one, get in touch with the car manufacturer directly. Browse the internet and find out if the seller is an official car dealer of the manufacturer. Also do check for the authenticity of the car's documents. Buying a luxurycar is a huge investment and any bad judgement will be costly. As per current rules a stolen car will be siezed and the owner will not be compensated.
