Skoda To Build Sub Rs 10 lakh SUV And Small Car
Skoda Auto India's member of the board in charge of sales and marketing, Thomas Kuehl said: "The SUV segment is not growing as fast as was expected. We have to go down and are looking at a product priced below Rs 10 lakh. We have over 25 per cent share in the D segment with Superb and 16.5 per cent share in the segment that has Laura. We are working to increase our presence in the SUV category." Mr Kuehl has not confirmed when the new Skoda SUV will be launched.
India's SUV market saw 320,000 sales last year and Mahindra dominated the sector with over 170,000 sales. Toyota was placed second with its Fortuner. The Yeti is the only Skoda's SUV currently sold in India. The Yeti has managed 900 sales last year and Skoda said it would make a smaller diesel engine as well as a petrol engine variants. The new Skoda SUV can make a dent in the luxury mid-sized sedan market that includes the Honda City, Volkswagen Vento and the Hyundai Verna.
Skoda has also announced plans to build a small car specifically for India. Skoda's small car will cost between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 5 lakh according to Mr Kuehl. Skoda has confirmed that its small car will be available with both petrol and diesel engines.
Skoda has a manufacturing facility in Aurangabad. However, the new Skoda small car will be built at the parent company Volkswagen's new plant in Chakan, Maharastra. The Chakan plant already produces the Skoda Fabia, Volkswagen Polo and the Volkswagen Vento.
Skoda is already developing two small cars, the Fabia Scout as well as the Rapid sedan. Skoda's announcement has meant Skoda wants to increase its presence in the indian small car sector that has been dominated by Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai. It is yet unclear if Skoda will be developing a new platform for the small car or if it will share the platform with VW's sub-Polo hatchback.
