Renault Hints At Developing Own Low Cost Car

Renault' India chief Marc Nassif said the company was having different options with regard to its ambitions of developing its low-cost car. "We always have a lot of projects going on," Nassif said. Renault, its Japanese partner Nissan have been non-committal about participating in Bajaj's low cost car project. The three companies have not signed a joint venture agreement so far.
Renault has said it would agree to join Bajaj only of the low cost car would match the French carmaker's DNA. Bajaj on its part has stated it would be developing a light commercial vehicle on the low cost car's platform. There have been differences of opinion between the stake holders about Bajaj's low cost car.
Renault has been cautious about its approach in India. It is working as an independent carmaker in India after it severed its joint venture with Mahindra and Mahindra. The Fluence sedan is Renault's first model to be lunched after the end of the joint venture. The French carmaker has plans to launch four new models in India within the next fifteen months.
Mr Mark Nassif and senior officials from the French company's global headquarters stated the new models would be the Koleos SUV, a new hatchback (to be brought in the Maruti Swift category) and the Dacia Duster SUV. The hatchback, which would be unveiled at the Delhi Auto Expo next year, will be the company's first product in the volume car segment in India. The car has been specifically designed for the Indian market by its design centre in Mumbai according to Mr Marc Nassif.
