Renault's Fluence and the after-launch plans

Renault India Plans
Renault launched the Fluence sedan in India in May. Renault India chief Marc Nassif said the Fluence was designed for the Asian market and hence the company is confident that it will not only shake up the segment, but also give Indian customers their first taste of what the French carmaker was capable of bringing to the market. The Renault Fluence is the first model from the French carmaker to be assembled in India at the Chennai facility. The petrol variant of the car is powered by a 1,997cc engine whereas the diesel variant is equipped with a 1,461cc engine.

The Renault Fluence enters a segment, where cars like Volkswagen Jetta, Skoda Laura and Toyota Corolla are available in both petrol and diesel variants and are priced in the range of Rs. 13 lakh to 16.5 lakh.

The Renault-Mahindra joint venture marked the beginning of the French carmaker's presence in India. It is now trying to make a mark as an independent carmaker and has started by launching the Renault Fluence. Renault has announced plans to increase sourcing parts manufactured locally in India.

According to Renault India's Deputy Managing Director Sudhir Rao, the company is looking to source parts worth 100 million Euros in 2012 compared with 35 million Euros worth of parts it obtained in the year 2010. For global automakers, India is being increasingly seen as a production hub. The rising cost pressures in their home markets have driven them to low cost countries such as India.

Renault also has plans to double its production capacity at its plant in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu to 400,000 units. The French carmaker has also committed to invest 45 billion rupees at the plant that will roll out five models starting with the Renault Fluence.

In the year 2005, the Renault-Mahindra joint venture was formed to make the Logan sedan in India. Initially, the Logan was greeted with enthusiasm, however, it saw disappointing sales thereafter, in part due to its length of more than 4 metres that attracted a higher factory-gate duty, making it expensive for its target segment. Renault India Managing Director Marc Nassif said that Logan has given the company a good learning about the Indian market. Now, the company knows what the customer wants, the market wants. The Renault Fluence sedan is expected to be followed by the Koleos SUV.
