The Petrol And Diesel Cars Argument

Most car buyers in India always preferred to buy petrol cars due to the low initial cost of procurement. Petrol cars also offer lower maintenance costs. The price difference between petrol and diesel was not too great and petrol car sales continued to grow. Now however with petrol costing over Rs70 and diesel prices around Rs.40 diesel car sales are growing at an unprecedented rate.
Although this price difference is compelling for a car buyer to choose a diesel car please do note the below points before making a choice.
A diesel car is more expensive than the same petrol variant by about Rs.80,000 to 1.5 lakh. The additional cost can be recovered only if the car is run for at least an average of 60 kilometres a day. By the time the fuel savings are equivalent to the increased price of the diesel car, you would have owned the car for more than three years. If you happen to buy the car using a bank loan the cost of owning a diesel car is much higher. Your monthly installments or EMIs are greater for a diesel car than for an equivalent petrol car.
The kind remnants a fuel leaves behind after combustion also needs to be considered before choosing an engine. While petrol burns more freely and hardly leaves behind any solid remnants. Diesel on the other hand is not a clean burning fuel. We always notice the smoke from a diesel car is more visible than in a petrol car. Such remnants cause engine damage if not serviced properly. This will always increase the maintenance cost of the diesel car.
Diesel cars require more frequent visits to the service centre than petrol cars. The fuel is quite abrasive and mechanics will tell you that an engine of a diesel car that has run for more than 50,000 kilometres would have suffered more damage than a petrol car that has run equal or more distance. So you must bear in mind the additional service costs the you will have to bear if you buy a diesel car.
If you are looking for sporty performance in your car, then petrol should be your choice. However if fuel economy is what you prefer, you can choose the diesel car. The recent fuel price hike has definitely lead to car buyers preferring diesel cars. However do keep in mind you can take advantage of a diesel car only if you use it extensively and service it at regular intervals.
