New Norms For Fuel Efficient Vehicles!

By By: Vicky.in

To determine the fuel efficiency of vehicles, the government will come out with new norms by the end of this month and looking to encourage the use of eco-friendly vehicles to combat pollution. From the year 2015, the new fuel efficiency standards will be mandatory for all companies.

Ajay Mathur, director general, bureau of energy efficiency said that they are working on the fuel efficiency standards that will be represented in kilometers/litre of fuel. And the vehicles would be classified on their weight to categorize them under different levels of fuel efficiency. For average fuel efficiency for all vehicles, government plans to provide star ratings. Adding, these star ratings would begin with passenger cars and move on to other vehicles such as scooters, buses, and truck. By dividing the sum total of fuel efficiency rates of all its models with the total number of vehicles sold, the fuel efficiency rate for a company will be calculated. Further, the new guidelines are based on 'Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency' (CAFE) norms widespread in the US since 1970's.

For failing to meet the local fuel standards, big carmakers such as BMW, Porsche, Audi, Lotus and Volkswagen have paid penalties in the US. Based on their weight and classification, car companies will submit reports of fuel efficiency on their models to government. And government will come up with the average fuel economy. Vishnu Mathur, director general, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers said that they are already disclosing all the details and would be working with the government to develop any rationale norms. And the norms will raise prospects of small vehicles that are light and are easier to confirm to these new standards.
