New Swift Dzire Smaller And Cheaper Coming Soom

By Suparna Chakaraborthy

The new Swift Dzire based on the platform of the 2011 Swift will be shorter that four meters. Maruti Suzuki has reduced the size of the Dzire so that the excise duty on the car is reduced. As per the current excise rules cars longer than four meters attract an excise duty of 22 per cent while shorter cars are charged just ten per cent. The reduced duty will mean the prize of the new Dzire will be cheaper by Rs30,000 to 40,000 when compared with the current model.

Maruti's decision to reduce the new Swift Dzire's size is also aimed at eliminating any similarities between the Dzire and the SX4. The SX4 sedan and the Dzire have similar engines and drive trains. The SX4 has not been very succesful in terms of sales and sales might dwindle further following the arrival of competition in the form of the Skoda Rapid, Nissan Sunny, Hyundai Verna and the Ford Fiesta. Maruti Suzuki does not want to create competition from within by placing the Dzire in the same bracket as the SX4. It remains to be seen if the new Swift Dzire will be appreciated by car enthusiasts as the previous version's design had recieved criticism.
