New Maruti Swift Bookings Increase Waiting Period

According to reports from the Business standard, bookings of the new Swift have crossed 38,000 units. We had earlier reported that the new Swift's bookings were over 25,000. This is by far the highest number of pre-launch bookings for a car in India. With 17 days remaining for the new Swift to be launched, the bookings might as well cross the 50k mark.
If such demand continues to sustain, waiting periods for the new Swift will definitely increase. IF Maruti Suzuki is not able to produce as many cars as requires, one need not be surprised if the waiting periods of the Swift crosses six months. It might be recalled that Maruti Suzuki had delivered its Zen hatchback over four years due to high demand and low production.
The carmaker has already expanded production after starting a new plant in Manesar. Maruti Suzuki has already started building the new Swift at its Manesar plant. There will be further increase in production after the company opens two new assembly lines.
Even Maruti Suzuki is surprised by the high demand for the new Swift. Mayank Pareek, managing executive officer (marketing & sales), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL), said, “The strong response is unprecedented, particularly because the new model has not hit the showrooms yet and the pricing points have not been determined."
The new Swift is slightly larger and roomier than the current model. Maruti Suzuki will be unveiling the car on August 17th in Delhi and will release pricing and specifications on the same date. The carmaker has worked hard to reduce the weight of the car so that it delivers a better fuel economy. The new Swift even has a plastic fuel tank to reduce weight.
The new Swift will face more stringent competition than its predecessor. The Indian hatchback sector now has successful models such as the Ford Figo, Volkswagen Polo and the Toyota Etios. Japanese carmaker Honda is also expected to launch its Brio hatchback.
