Mercedes-Benz To Launch Compact Cars In 2012

Mercedes-Benz, the German Luxury carmaker has announced plans to unveil its compact range of car in India by 2012. The left hand drive version of the Mercedes-Benz compact car will be launched in the US and Europe later this year and the right hand drive version will be made available next year, according to Mercedes Benz India MD and CEO Peter Honegg.

Mr Honegg while speaking to reporters said: “Initially, cars with Left Hand Drive option, manufactured at our facilities in Germany and Hungary, will be introduced in Europe later this year. We plan to bring them to India by 2012-13 as Completely Knocked Down (CKD) units."

Mercedes-Benz does not have the facility to build the compact cars in its Chakan plant yet. It currently builds the C-Class, E-Class and S-Class sedans in India. Mercedes-Benz's compact cars are now available in Europe. The company has said it would update the A-Class and B-Class compact cars later this year.

Speaking about the company's sales this year, Mr Honegg said he was expecting sales to cross 7,000 units. Mercedes-Benz sold 5,800cars last year. He also said the company was expecting to sell 130 to 140 Actros buses. He also said the company was planning to expand the number of its dealerships in India from the current 30.
