Mercedes To Launch Two New Car Models
Mercedes Benz India MD & CEO Peter T Honegg said both the car models along with an unnamed SUV will be first displayed at the Delhi Autoexpo in January 2012. Mr Honegg expects the entry level cars to bolster Mercedes sales towards five figures once sales begin in India. While the current A-class is a new model, a new version of the B-class is under development.
The A-class and the B-class are built on the sameplatform and share the engine and suspension system. The A-class is a mini car that has been Mercedes-Benz's entry level car in several international markets. The B-Class is a slightly larger family car. The former costs £11,000-£13,000 in the UK while the later carries a price tage ranging between £19,000 to £23,000. Mercedes-Benz has to ensure the price of these two models is not to high as the Indian small car scene is already crowded by several models.
Mercedes-Benz has been relegated from its position as the top luxury carmaker in India by BMW and Audi. Mr Honegg said his company was pushing hard to retain its top position by increasing its presence in India by opening new showrooms. The AMG high performance models would also be launched in India according to Mr Honegg. He also said Mercedes intended to increase diesel powered vehicles in its portfolio to suit Indian market trends.
