Maruti Suzuki Workers Boycott Union Elections

MSEU general secretary Shiv Kumar has said: "We will boycott as we have nothing to do with this election process. We feel that this is just an exercise for the Gurgaon plant and Manesar does not require elections at all since we are the workers representative body here."
Maruti Suzuki chairman R C Bhargava has said the management was not involved in the election process and added that the election would be conducted at both plants. A company spokesperson said the firm had received any notice of boycott of election from the workers. He also said no negotiations will be held with the unrecognised union on any issue.
Workers from Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant has also sought recognition from the Haryana Government and has stated that it was the official representative of Manesar workers. However the Maruti Suzuki management does not want to add another union. It has stated that it was one company and needed only one workers union. The management is still seething with the losses caused last month due to a strike at Manesar.
The MSEU was set up by workers as they felt their opinions were not being considered by the Maruti Udyog Kamgar Union (MUKU), which they allege to be dominated by workers from Maruti Suzuki's Gurgaon plant. With the management not recognising the union the workers went on a 13 day strike that resulted in huge losses.
The union election has rekindled the confrontation between Maruti Suzuki's workers at Manesar and the management. India's largest carmaker has already suffered by the 13-day strike. Sales have reduced in June and any labour issues in the future will add to the pressure. With both parties maintaining a rigid stance, one cannot rule out a strike soon after the union election.
