Maruti Suzuki India has reported that the sales of the Wagon R hatchback had crossed the 10 lakh mark after its launch 12 years ago. The Wagon R is the fourth model in Maruti Suzuki's line-up to cross the coveted sales milestone after the Maruti 800, Alto and Omni van.

Announcing the Wagon R's sales record, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Chief General Manager (Marketing) Shashank Srivastava said: “It is a very proud moment for us and it gives more happiness because this milestone has been achieved in the domestic market. With the launch of the new Wagon R, sales have grown for the model. At present we are selling about 15,000 units per month."

The Wagon R hatchback which was launched in 1999 managed to attain sales of just 5,902 units in its first year. However it continued upwards to reach the second spot in the list of India's highest selling models behind the Alto. Maruti Suzuki sold 1.63 lakh units of the Wagon R in the previous financial year. Maruti Suzuki had earlier reported that the Alto sales had crossed 3,00956 units last year making it the highest selling car in the world. Maruti Suzuki's massive market share in India can be understood by the fact that India's second highest selling car, the Wagon R is also from its stables.

The Wagon R has witnessed several model updates so far with a dramatic complete model change last year. It is currently priced between Rs 3.36 lakh and Rs 4.24 lakh (ex showroom Delhi). Powered by a 998cc engine it is available in both CNG and LPG variants along with petrol and diesel.

The Wagon R competes with new hatchbacks such as Chevrolet Beat, Ford Figo, Hyundai i10 and Volkswagen Polo. With an affordable starting price and Maruti Suzuki's image of low maintenance costs has meant Wagon R's sales have continued to increase over the years. It will face stiffer competition this year as competition will increase after the launch of the Honda Brio as well as a new small car from Hyundai. Honda has confirmed the launch of the Brio in India this year although production has been hindered due to the earthquake in Japan.
