Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors Report Increase In April Sales

India's largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki reported a four per cent increase in sales for the month of April. The firm sold 93,058 units this April which includes 87,144 domestic sales. Exports in April were not up to the mark with a 23.13 per cent drop to 10,011 units. Maruti Suzuki's 25 year old model, the Maruti 800 lead April's sales after an icrease of 11.96 per cent to 2,528 units. Sales of the A2 segment cars which include the Alto, Wagon R, A-Star, Estillo and Ritz increased by 1. 82 per cent to 57,443 units while Dzire and the SX4 models together posted an increase of 39.7 per cent to 13,899 units.

Tata Motors reported a 13 per cent increase in overall sales in April. India's second largets vehicle manufacturer said sales of its commercial vehicles increased by 19 per cent to 36,738 units. There was a marginal increase in passenger vehicle sales after Tata sold 25,436 units (23,387 Tata + 2,049 Fiat) as against last April's sales figure of 24,899 (23,099 Tata + 1,800 Fiat). Sales of the Tata Nano increased by 184 per cent while sales of the Indica fell by 53 per cent. The Nano has not been able to match the hype that was around during its launch. However April's increased sales will definitely compensate reduced sales in other segemnts. Sales of the Indigo were also not too encouraging which fell by 27 per cent. Tata said sales of its larger passenger vehicles such as the Safari, Aria, Suma and Venture had increased by 15 per cent to 3,843 units from last year.

On the export front, Tata Motors sales stood at 4,258 vehicles in April 2011 and registered a growth of 36% compared to 3,137 vehicles in April last year.

Other carmakers have also reported monthly car sales increases. Skoda was the most succesful among them. Skoda sold 2,446 units this April posting a 90 per cent increase from last april's sales figure of 1,285 units. Hyundai Motors, India's second largest passenger carmaker could only manage a sales hike of 38 units at 52,058 azs against 52,020 units sold in the corrsponding period last year.

Maruti Suzuki's sales increase of 4.4 per cent is by far the lowest the carmaker has reported in the recent past. Tata Motors sales results are much more akin to the market trend. Car sales have been robust in India. However experts are expecting sales will reach a plateau soon. The increasing commodity prices, the recent hike in interest rates and several carmakers deciding to increase prices will definitely put a break on sales.
