Maruti Suzuki Strike Ends; Production To Resume Tomorrow

Maruti Strike ends
The 13 day strike at Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant has finally ended. The strike was called off after Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda brokered a truce between the warring management and worker's unions. Maruti Suzuki has accepted to reinstate the 11 workers who were dismissed after they started a new union. However the Maruti Suzuki's management has not accepted the worker's demand to recognise a new workers union.

A Maruti Suzuki spokesman said the carmaker would not recognise the new workers union. Further he also said workers would be levied a penalty of three days salary for every working day lost.

The strike at Manesar had drastically reduced production and Maruti Suzuki had sought the help of the Haryana government to resolve the issue. The government had said the strike was illegal and had banned it. Maruti Suzuki management had said it would not be paying salary to the striking workers. The government which brokered the talks between the management and workers has asked the company to be lenient towards the workers and not impose any penalties.

The 2,000 workers at Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant finally accepted to call of the strike when the management agreed to reinstate the dismissed union leaders. The company has said it would initiate disciplinary proceedings against these workers. Maruti Suzuki was desperate to end the strike as it had already suffered a production loss of 12, 600 units. The Manesar plant had become very critical to Maruti Suzuki as a majority of its diesel cars were produced here. Demand for diesel cars has increased and the India's leading carmaker would not be able to meet demand if the strike continued.

The strike at Manesar was supported by several workers unions in the Manesar-Gurgaon belt. Other Indian carmakers in the area feared the strike would spread to their operations as well. The situation has finally been resolved peacefully although Maruti Suzuki has suffered revenue losses of Rs420 crores.
