Slowing Market Preventing Maruti Suzuki Price Hike

India's Leading carmaker Maruti Suzuki will not be increasing car prices any time soon. Shashank Srivastava the Chief General Manager ( Marketing ) of Maruti Suzuki has said the current market conditions did not warrant an increase in car prices.

Mr Srivastava was speaking in the background of the company launching the new Swift hatchback in August. He said the new car was currently being built in Gurgaon. Sales of the Swift have crossed more than 12,000 units per month and Maruti Suzuki intends to increase it further with the new model.

Mr Srivastava while explaining the reasons behind Maruti Suzuki not planning price hikes said car sales were slowing down considerably and a price hike would hamper any possible recovery. He also said commodity prices were stable in the recent months and hence a price hike would not be needed immediately. However if commodity prices shoot up a price hike will become inevitable.

It is highly unlikely for Maruti Suzuki to hike prices soon. The carmaker whose product line-up is dominated by small hatchbacks cannot afford to alienate itself from buyers by increasing prices. Considering the fact that there are many more players in the small car scene post the launch of the Toyota Etios Liva, Hyundai announcing plans for a small car and Skoda also contemplating a budget small car, Maruti Suzuki can ill afford a price hike.
