Maruti Suzuki Plant To Be Set Up In Gujarat

Maruti plant in Gujarat
Maruti Suzuki India's (MSIL) Managing Director Shinzo Nakanishi met Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi to discuss the car maker's plans to build a new car plant in Gujarat. Today's meeting has cleared the rumours about Maruti Suzuki's plans for its latest manufacturing facility in India. The Gujarat government has agreed to provide 500 acres of land on which Maruti Suzuki will build its plant.

R C Bhargava, chairman of MSIL spoke to reporters after the meeting. He said: “We are in the process of exploring the land for the unit. It will take about 3 months. We are expanding and are investing Rs. 6,000 crore." Sources say Maruti Suzuki's plant in Gujarat will be located near Sanand, the very location where Tata Motors has set up its plant to build the Nano.

Senior MSI officials had visited Gujarat last month to identify an appropriate location for a new plant and had held talks with officials. Narendra Modi was successful in attracting the Tata Nano plant to Gujarat as he offered several sops to Tata Motors. It remains to be seen if Maruti Suzuki will also be offered similar sops. Maruti Suzuki's plant in Gujarat will be its seventh plant in India and the first outside Haryana.
