Maruti Suzuki Workers Go On Flash Strike

Maruti Strike
Maruti Suzuki continues to have problems with its workforce at its Manesar plant. Workers went on a flash one hour strike during which they refused to work causing a production loss of 50 vehicles. The strike was in response to Maruti Suzuki suspending four workers.

Maruti Suzuki's representatives have said that a supervisor was assaulted by five workers yesterday and they were suspended today as a disciplinary action. Three of the suspended workers are the office bearers of the yet to be recognised Maruti Suzuki Workers Union.

A spokes person for india's largest carmaker said: “One of the supervisors was assaulted by workers yesterday and when disciplinary action was being taken by way of suspension today, they have struck works at the plant. The number of workers on strike are much less this time."

The workers have said the strike was only a temporary one and was in response to the disciplinary action against their colleagues. One of the striking worker said: “The hour-long tool down strike was to protest the forcible eviction of four colleagues by police."

However, the strike is clear indication that the workers at Manesar and the Maruti Suzuki management continue to be in loggerheads. The simmering discontent among the workers at Manesar continues to increase. There were hints that the workers could go ona strike earlier after Maruti Suzuki announced union elections without considering the newly set up Maruti Suzuki Workers Union of Manesar.
