Maruti Strike Negligible: Suzuki CEO

Osamu Suzuki
The Japanese carmaker Suzuki's CEO, Osamu Suzuki, has said the strike at Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant was negligible. HE said the strike had lasted only six working days and the production loss was only 16,000 vehicles.

Speaking to reporters at a news conference Mr Osamu Suzuki said: “In a market where we sell 1.2 million vehicles a year, 16,000 vehicles was a matter of inventory adjustment." He also said he was not surprised by the short lived strike at Manesar. Further he reiterated the Maruti Suzuki management's decision not to recognise a new labour union at Manesar. This is the first time Suzuki's CEO has commented on the strike.

It might be recalled that Maruti Suzuki workers at Manesar had held a 13 day long strike at Manesar seeking recognition of a new labour union. The Haryana government brokered a truce between the workers and the Maruti Suzuki management.
