Mahindra Developing Alto Fighting Small Car

The Mahindra small car is expected to be launched in 2013-14.
The Verito is Mahindra and Mahindra's smallest model. We can expect the carmaker to chop the Verito's boot to make it a hatchback. While this is one possibility, the carmaker can also develop a new platform as the Verito's platform has been in use since five years. Mahindra has always developed new vehicles from scratch and the new small car can also follow the same route. The Scorpio SUV and the Xylo MUV have been developed without any model or platform as a base.
Mahindra has not made any details of its small car project public. It is said to be working on the project at its research and development wing in Chennai. Reports say it has already made an investment of Rs.800 crores at the R&D wing.
If Mahindra truly wants to compete with the Maruti Suzuki Alto, then it has to develop a diesel engine for its small car. There has already been a huge shift towards diesel powered cars even in the small car sector and Mahindra can capitalise on it. There have been reports that the Xylo MUV will soon get a 1.5-litre diesel engine and a smaller version of the same can be used in the Mahindra small car.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto has been one car that is least affected by the slowing car market. With hardly any competitor to list, the Alto is one car that is hard to beat. If the Mahindra small car can make dent in Alto's sales, it is surely a great achievement.
