Collision Avoidance System From Volvo

Volve Safety System
Car Safety systems are evolving constantly across the world. Swedish carmaker Volvo is one of the pioneers in the development of car safety devices. There is even a perception that Volvo car drivers are much safer than drivers of other branded cars. It has recently introduced a new low-speed collision avoidance system developed by German firm Continental AG called City Safety that it claims will reduce the number of road accidents.

Volvo installed the low speed collision avoidance system in the XC60 SUV. The carmaker made study of all road accidents in Sweden and the results indicated how successful the low speed collision avoidance system was. According to the results, in accidents involving the Volvo XC60 there was 27 per cent lower property damage than cars without the collision avoidance system. Further The XC60 was involved in 51 per cent lesser accidents that had caused bodily injury.

Volvo has named the low speed collision avoidance system as City Safety as this will be more effective in cities where vehicles ply in low speeds due to heavy traffic. It uses a special infra red system called the infra red laser sensor. The system automatically applies the brakes if it notices a possibility of a collision when the car is travelling up to a speed of 35kmph. At speeds greater than 35kmph, it reduces the speed of the vehicle thus reducing damage after impact.

The system also warns drivers about an impending collision and thus helps is preventing accidents. Driver mistakes are said to be the reason behind about 90per cent of the road accidents. If drivers are forewarned about any possible collision then there are fewer possibilities of accidents.

With the study showing that the low speed collision avoidance system is n effective life saving mechanism, it is only prudent this system is used in all cars. The US road safety authority has expressed its support to the new technology. Once the technology is used widely, its impact on road safety will become more clear.
