India Ford Figo Will Expand Soon
The MD and President of Ford India said India would be the small hub for Ford and the only place to produce Figo that no other country would be involved in producing Figo. He added that in the event of demands for this strategy for other models in any other market, then the company would decide suitably. In another two weeks, the company will export 1500 units of its Figo to Mexico by which there will be a rise in other markets too. He said this will follow with exports to North Africa, Middle East and Caribbean in addition to the existing export to South Africa and Nepal.
The export volume during 2010 was 12000 units from which Figo and Fiesta comprised 1200 units. In spite of this, he said, Ford is aiming to concentrate on the domestic market meeting the demand. He explained that the company has secured the fourth largest car maker in the Indian market with the January sale reaching 10000 units. Other companies in the fray are Maruti, Hyundai and Tata Motors and he affirmed that the company intended to build on this platform. In a bid to balance the demand in domestic and export markets, the company is aiming to increase its production capacity from its Chennai facility. With double shifts working, the facility produces 2800 units a week and on demand there will be third shift to have the full capacity of 2 lakh units per year, he said.
He said after phasing out its sedan Ikon, now the company is aiming to offer new Fiesta this year. On the engine aspect, he said the company"s Thailand wing is sourcing engines from Chennai facility and expected more such offers from other regions too. The company"s Chennai facility has an investment of 0 million for doubling the production capacity to 2 lakh units per year and a new engine model for delivering 2.5 lakh units.
