Indian Car Sales To Slow Down; But Not Volkswagen

Volkswagen Jetta
An Indian auto industry official has predicted that the Indian auto sector will register a growth of about 12-14 per cent in 2011as against the 30 per cent growth seen in 2010. The increasing fuel prices and other economic factors making a dent in car sales the Indian auto sector was expected to slow down.

Neeraj Garg, the Director (Member of Board) of Volkswagen Passenger Cars Division of Volkswagen Group Sales India Private Limited said the current picture for carmakers was gloomy but added sales at his company would actually increase from last year's sales.

Volkswagen had sold 32,500 cars in India in 2010 and has already sold 39,366 vehicles in the first six months of this year. Mr Garg when asked if it would be possible for Volkswagen to sustain its sales in the later part of this year, said he would not be able to make an accurate prediction but only said there could be a slowdown.

Mr Garg said the German carmaker would launch the new Volkswagen Jetta in India in the coming months. Speaking about Volkswagen''s future plans, Mr Garg said Volkswagen was looking at entering the pre-owned car market and had already conducted a market study.

The recent petrol price hike has had an effect on Volkswagen's sales. While in 2010, more than 60 per cent of the buyers of the Polo preferred petrol engines, this year sales of the petrol and diesel variants of the polo are at an equal 50:50. Its the same with the Vento which is the sedan version of the Polo.
