General Motors' Indian division GM India and China based SAIC are to begin trial production of the forthcoming light commercial vehicles (LCVs) after Diwali in October. The GM LCV is expected to enter the market in the first quarter of 2012. GM said the LCV will be manufactured at GM's Halol plant.

P Balendran, vice president, corporate affairs, General Motors India said the Halol plant's expansion was on track and and the GM LCVs would roll out sometime in the end of this year or first quarter of 2012. The company is expanding annual production capacity from 85,000 units to 100,000 units. He also said the recent labour strikes had not affected the expansion plans.

According to reports, the work on the new press shop is in progress and that trial production of LCVs will start post Diwali. General Motors has invested $250 million (Rs 1,125 crore) for the launch of the LCV. Trial production of the GM LCV will be followed by testing on Indian roads before official the launch. GM decided to launch the new LCV in India considering the current growth rate of the commercial vehicle market in India. Analysts expect sales to clock at least 1.28 million units this year. Also, the LCV segment is growing at 25 per cent yearly and market size is at over 2.8 lakh units.

GM and its joint venture partner SAIC also plan to launch three passenger vehicles developed in China. GM currently makes the sports utility vehicle Tavera, hatchback Aveo-UVA, sedans Aveo and Cruze at Halol. GM's Halol plant will be used to build two LCVs chosen from the SAIC's portfolio at a later date.
