GM India To Increase Diesel Car Models

General Motors India President and Managing Director Karl Slym while speaking about the possibility of a diesel powered Spark said: “There is always a possibility of extending the diesel option to what customers demand." He also said a diesel engine would be considered for the Aveo UVA premium hatchback and Aveo sedan if there was sufficient demand.
The Aveo UVA is currently available with a petrol engine while the Aveo sedan comes with a petrol and a CNG powered engine.
Mr Slym said demand for diesel cars was increasing as the price difference between diesel and petrol had increased to more that Rs.26. He also said the company was preparing itself to meet customer demand for more diesel cars.
GM India currently has an engine plant in Talegaon that can produce 1.6 lakh engines per year and it is flexible enough to churn out both petrol and diesel engines as per market demands. "The plant can build engines up to 1.5-litre capacity and it is fully flexible for both petrol and diesel. So capacity is not a constraint for us," said Mr Slym..
The Chevrolet diesel will get a new 1-litre three-cylinder engine produced at the Talegaon plant. Speaking about the new engine Mr Slym said: “The technology is from GM Europe, but it has been adapted to suit the Indian conditions specifically. It will be only in India that the Beat is available in a diesel option, nowhere else."
