Strike At General Motors Come To An End

The strike has officially come to an end after the all striking workers decided to return to work. General Motors India vice-president, corporate affairs P Balendran said, "The remaining workers that were involved in a labor dispute in our Halol plant have decided to call off their actions and will resume duties as of tomorrow morning."
GM workers launched the strike on March 25th protesting against the GM management's decision to transfer several employees as well as on health grounds. Workers had claimed that they were being overworked and some of the workers who had complained about it had been transfered to dealer and sub-dealer outlets in Delhi, Gurgaon, Chennai and Haryana. While several GM workers had initially taken part in the strike the number of striking workers came down over a period of time.
General Motors employs 900 workers at its Halol plant. The plant used to build 190 cars per day before the labour dispute and production was drastically affected. Production improved slightly after some workers rejoined work. GM also hired about 150 temporary workers to increase production to 150 units per day. This is not the first time GM workers at Halol have resorted to strikes. They had undertagen a strike last October seeking higher wages. The strike at General Motors is in striking contrast with the instance of Maruuti Suzuki saving Rs 160 crore after implementing suggestions provided by its workers.
