GM Promotes Workers At Halol To Curb Unrest

The Decision to promote several workers at Halol by General Motors is seen as a way of creating a positive environment at the plant. The carmaker is planning to introduce new models this year and considers the involvement of workers as a key to its success. GM India will be producing light commercial vehicles designed by its partner in China, Shanghai Automotive.
General Motors' vice-president, corporate affairs Mr. P Balendran said: “We are among the highest payers in the industry, and workers should not have any reason for complaint. When the second strike took place, it was primarily out of inter-union rivalry. Most workers resumed work within a few days, and others kept trickling in. It took them 51 days to realize that it was in their best interests to stick to GM India."
Workers at General Motors' Halol plant expressed surprise at the management's decision to promote so many workers as they had feared the yearly appraisals would not be positive considering the two previous strikes.
Analysts believe General motor's decision to promote its permanent workers is a move to prevent any labour unrest in the future. The company had suffered losses after the workers had participated in strikes. The carmaker does not want to face a similar situation again. It can be recalled that India's biggest carmaker Maruti Suzuki had a 13 day long strike that ended last week. That strike resulted in Maruti Suzuki suffering losses totalling Rs.420 crores.
