Electric Cars Are Booming The Markets!

By Suparna Chakaraborthy

There has been a synonymous link between electric and hybrid versions of cars in the global market. Of the players involved in this sector, Toyota is on top with huge sale volume as its electric forklifts are getting instant popularity with the established markets in three countries. In the UK market Toyota is the second most popular for material handling vehicles. Toyota might have gained further volume if the number one, Linde had not sold its material handling dealing to KKR and Goldman Sachs on KION branding. The deal was stuck for 4 billion Euros despite the scope of the company running for the long term.

The Chairman of IDTechEx, Nissan, Hyundai and Toyota involve in cross pollinating EV component purchasing power and experience within their material handling, vehicles and further electric dealings including buses. Ever since 2008 Nissan has been in the process of promoting ac motors under forklifts, and lithium-ion batteries. Other big player in this segment is Jungheinrich which made a field test for its innovative electric counterbalanced forklift last year. The company is on the verge of launching this version- EFG 216K truck- this year. The vehicle is to come with a lithium-ion traction battery and already Toyota has chalked out its plans to enter into this sector by replacing NiMH in its hybrid cars. The pioneering effort in material handling business was mooted by the Japanese company Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Limited. The company had already finished the erection of traction battery plant in its Nagasaki Shipyard and Machinery Works some six months ago.

The annual capacity of this plant will be around 4 lakh units. Toyota"s Prius is running in almost three major continents and the latest Auris too is a hybrid optional being manufactured in the UK plant. The company has been making its strong hold in the electric version though with some reservations about the level of battery. Instead Toyota is focusing on the hybrid versions pushing the electric version behind. Sensing the imminent growth of Toyota in this segment many big companies are in the making of JVs such as BMW- PSA Peugeot Citroen on 50:50 basis. The JV will be effective from the second quarter with an aim for developing hybrid powertrains with huge volume. This was preceded by the partnership between Daimler AG which procured 10% of Tesla"s electric versions for models like Mercedes and Smart. Another tie-up is with Renault Nissan for developing compact version of electric vehicles. Simultaneously Renault Nissan has a partnership with Mitsubishi which has assured to deliver electric versions for all its models.

There has been an instant need to focus on the electric version despite being a developer or producer of a vehicle or components. A major breakthrough on the growing stint of this electric cars is the Electric Vehicles Land Sea Air event from IDTechEx slated for June 28-29 in Stuttgart this year. The event will bring to the fore of new subsystems, components and materials while stressing the design formation in wheel motors, supercabbatteries and 3G lithium traction battery.
