Daimler To Roll Out Bharat Benz New Model

By Denise Baptiste

The Indian auto industry is on the verge of extending its wings with global players launching their new arrivals. The latest among them is the one from the world best truck maker Daimler"s Bharat Benz, which is scheduled for assembling in its Chennai facility at an investment of Rs4400 crore. With this, the segment gets one more giant after Navistar from the US, Volvo from Sweden and Man from Germany. The chairman of Daimler said that the venture has been a delayed one due to slowdown and incidentally this truck is the fifth from the company"s platform globally.

He added that the company is willing to occupy the leadership position in the segment with the very best product like Bharat Benz. Daimler"s earlier attempt to enter into India with the tie-up from Munjals" Hero Group could not materialize some two years ago. In the process, Hero group withdrew but Daimler had secured 40% stake in the venture to make its own business in India. He stressed that from this eventual delay, the company has decided not to have any further tie-up for the commercial products except components from Tata Motors.

Daimler has been in India since 2007 assembling Mercedes-Benz Actros heavy-duty trucks and buses and is on the verge of delivering trucks under 6-49 tonne category in this Bharat Benz model. Daimler is said to have its assembling of these trucks from its Oragadam facility near Chennai with the annual capacity of 36000 units and the first unit is expected for delivery next year.

The company"s head for Trucks and Buses pointed out that India has been the second largest market for medium and heavy-duty trucks. He added that the country"s truck market would double by this decade end in which Daimler would serve in a more prolific manner.

The volume for the buses and trucks in2010 stood at 652692 units with the growth of 45%. Daimler is a well known name in the car segment to with its passenger vehicles under Mercedes-Benz India with C-Class, E-Class and S-Class luxury sedans. However, the trucks are marketed globally under Mercedes-Benz, Freightliner, Fuso and Western Star brands. Daimler alone is the company to run its show on own while other global players have a tie-up in the Indian market for trucks- Man has Force Motors, Navistar has M&M while Volvo has Eicher Motors. The reasons attributed for the imminent growth in the truck market are the erection of road facilities largely and the rise in economy.
