BMW Wants To Be Number One In Luxury!
The Chennai facility of the German car maker, BMW is to increase the annual capacity to 10000 from the existing 6000 units. The move comes in the wake of the company"s aim to attain the number one spot in the luxury car market. The company"s Board member said given the level of growth the company may think of erecting the second facility by 2015.
The facility is currently assembling its 3 series, 5 series and X1 SUV models while the X3 will be assembled during the mid-year.
The company has devised a strategy to focus on electric and hybrid versions of vehicles to combat the increase in oil prices. The countries where such a move is improvised is India, China and Brazil. By 2013 , the company would be able to deliver highly sustainable electric cars and the very first in this series will be i3. The member said the company is looking for new models and the possibilities are more for the launch of the second generation BMW series in emerging markets.
