The country"s second largest in heavy commercial vehicles manufacturing Ashok Leyland with its ally Nissan is aiming to launch light weight commercial trucks during the second half of this year.

This was disclosed by the company"s Vice Chairman adding that there will be three new products - light van, light truck, and a heavy truck in two phases.

The project will incur the JV an investment of Rs1100- 1200 crore during the initial phase in another 3-4 years. The company"s Hosur plant will be geared to deliver 1 lakh annual units which will be upgraded to 190000 units when the Sriperumpudur facility comes off. This later facility will be of Greenfield nature at an extend of 380 acres and the approval from the government of Tamilnadu is awaited, he added. Though the company is focused on domestic market, the overseas markets comprising Asia will be given priority, he pointed out.
