The Hinduja Group company"s wing Ashok Leyland is aiming to enter into the construction vehicles business during the Q2 of this fiscal. The move comes in the wake of too much of strain in the truck sector and the first delivery will be backhoe loaders.

The vehicle will come off from the JV with the American company John Deere with the local brand name , Leyland Deere. This is the follow up of Tata Motors" entry into this segment and became the market leader with the introduction of its products under the JV with Japan"s Hitachi. In another move, M&M has entered into this sector with its earth moving vehicle. These companies ventured in this sector as the government has expedited the infrastructure development activities.

The capacity of the segment is around 55000 - 60000 units which are pressed into construction of malls, roads and high rise buildings. The MD of Ashok Leyland said that there would be launch of backhoe loaders and excavators in a year"s time.

Moreover, the company will see its strong presence in the LCV segment as there had been a minor vehicle launch recently. The company felt that the business would be better in this fiscal( around 1 lakh units) than the one achieved in the last fiscal (94000 units), barring LCVs of 20000 units proposed for this year. The reason cited for this is the introduction of many number of vehicles under its platform. There will be an additional investment of Rs800 crore during this fiscal and in the bygone six months, he added, the company delivered 600 new models for the existing products.
