Ambassador, The Legendary Car Is On A Facelift
The rounded rear squab and curvaceous sloping are to be replaced with an aerodynamic bonnet having straight lines and a fresh boot having integrated tail lights. The headlamps will be of latest wrap-around pattern and the entire design will resemble the country"s top most selling hatchback from Maruti - Swift. The calibrations of the engine too will undergo changes and will be fitted with an anti-lock brake system, aluminium alloy wheels. The interiors will be fixed with new leather seating with wood grain. The inmates can enjoy music with integrated music system and instrument cluster coping the latest requirement. The company is keen on retaining the traditional merits of dependability, space and comfort.
The MD of the company said the changes are on process and they are from various options and the initial process will be on minor changes and the macro changes will be in due course of time. The vendors too confirm that there could be changes in Ambassador to suit the current generation. They feel that the changes will be of radical in features and redefined looks in terms of competitive sedans. Hindustan Motors is taking such steps to retro platform car to a more popular model on the lines of Maruti SX4, VW Vento, Ford Fiesta and Honda City. The changes will be accorded from the consultancy of the British Morris Oxford. However, it is to be seen whether the redefined Ambassador would fetch the desired results.
For many years, the car had been the darling of many government offices and this could be seen from the traditional working location in West Bengal, since 1948. Still the sale volume of Ambassador has not been on good track - 5510 units in the first ten months of this fiscal which was 8210 units in the previous fiscal. Some industry analysts feel that Ambassador cannot regain its lost glory as the government agencies are not in favor of it. The company had earlier changed this car in 2004 in the form of Avigo to recollect the Mini and Porsche. But the move failed to reap in rewards and this is the final attempt from HM to revitalize the once popular model from it.
