PSA officials had previously held talks with several state governments before zeroing in on Gujarat. An official statement on PSA's investment in Gujarat has not been made and it is expected to be made in three days rime. Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh were also considered by the French carmaker.
A Gujarat government official said: “A Peugeot delegation, including Gregoire Olivier, CEO (Asian operations) and Frederic Fabre, managing director of PSA Peugeot (India project), will be coming to Ahmedabad on Thursday to sign a memorandum of understanding for the car project."
PSA will most likely be allotted land in the vicinity of Fords India's car plant in Sanand. The town also has Tata Motors' Nano plant. This is the first time PSA Peugeot Citroen is working as an independent carmaker in India. It had previously in a joint venture with Premier which ended in 2001.
The carmaker is now planning to build a new sedan at its plant in India. It is planning to have a production capacity of 3 lakh units per year.
Sanand is emerging as a potent auto hub after PSA's decision. It already has the Tata Nano plant. Ford Motors has acquired 5,000 acres to built its second car plant in India. Maruti Suzuki has also expressed interest to set up a car plant here.
