Maruti Hires Contract Labour To Resume Production

Maruti Production
Maruti Suzuki has resumed production at its plant in Manesar although not at full capacity. The Indian carmaker has hired contract workers to restart production that has halted since yesterday. The stand-off between Maruti Suzuki's management and the workers does not appears to have come down.

Maruti Suzuki is insisting that it would resume production only after all the workers sign its good conduct bond. Most workers at Manesar support the currently unrecognised Maruti Suzuki Employees union and only 29 workers out of 1,900 have signed the bond.

Maruti Suzuki has already suffered a loss of more than Rs.60 crores following the halt in production in Manesar. Incidentally the recently launched new Swift hatchback is being built at this plant and any stoppage in production will severely impact waiting periods. The other two models built here, the A-Star and the SX4 do not have such long waiting periods.

With production lost for more than three shifts, insiders estimate there is a production loss of 1,800 cars. With Maruti Suzuki partially resuming and a possibility of the impasse being resolved the waiting period for the new Swift might not be affected much.
