Maruti Fires More Workers; Production Halted

Maruti Suzuki
Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) continues to take stringent action against erring workers at Manesar. The Indian carmaker has suspended 16 more permanent workers and dismissed 12 trainees even as the tussle between the management and workers showing signs of escalation.

Production at Manesar plant has come to a grinding halt after only a handful workers accepted to sign the good conduct bond that Maruti Suzuki's management asked the workers to sign yesterday. Only workers who had signed the bond were allowed to enter the plant yesterday. The bond was brought in to force after the company found serious quality issues.

A MSI spokesperson while speaking about the situation at Manesar said: “ Production has not started yet, but there are indications that it will resume today with alternate arrangements like contract workers and hiring technicians. We have suspended 16 more permanent employees today and also terminated the services of 12 more technician trainees"

MSI's management is continuing with its aggressive stance today after it fired five workers and suspended 10 of them yesterday. The management appears to be severely disturbed by the sudden drop on production quality. It may be recalled that production and quality issues did not arise even during the period when Maruti Suzuki's Manesar worker's plea for a new union was rejected.

While the carmaker has said the workers have been suspended or dismissed for sabotage, Mr Shiv Kumar, who represents the currently unrecognised Maruti Suzuki Employees union has said the management was firing employees as a retaliatory measure for the 13 day strike that was held in June. Mr Shiv Kumar added: “The management is taking revenge on us and forcing us to sign an undertaking following rejection of our application to form a union at the plant by the Haryana government."

Maruti Suzuki India has decided to move all manual work from Manesar to Gurgaon until the production issues are sorted at Manesar. It is understood that the waiting period of all cars built at this plat will increase following this stand-off. The new Swift, DZire, A-Star and the SX4 sedans are built at Manesar.
