Maruti Strike Completes A Month; Talks Fail Again

In an attempt to pacify workers, some members of Maruti Udyog Kamgar Union (MUKU) held talks with them but there was no positive result. The workers have asked the strike will end only if the dismissed workers are taken back. Maruti Suzuki has accepted to take back just the 18 trainees but not the permanent workers who have been accused of attacking a supervisor.
This is by far the longest labour dispute for Maruti Suzuki in recent times and possibly the most expensive too. Production at Manesar is slowly getting back to normalcy with the second shift of production restarting on Wednesday, Sep,28. The carmaker has said it has started building the SX4 and the A-Star at Manesar despite the strike. Production of the SX4 and the A-Star was stopped completely on August 29th and the plant was producing just the Swift which currently has a waiting list of over a lakh.
Production of the new Swift which has been going on in Manesar and Gurgaon has reached 700 units bringing the cumulative production f the Swift to 10,000 units.
Maruti Suzuki again insisted that it was well within its rights as an employer to ask its workers to sign a good conduct bond. The workers have said the bond was initiated as a revenge against the 13 day strike that was held in June.
