General Motors Stops Petrol Car Production

General Motors has sid it had completely stopped production of petrol cars in its plants after demand for its diesel cars increased. GM is using its production lines to build diesel cars only. The fuel price difference between petrol and diesel has become so huge that people have virtually stopped buying them.

The American carmaker has a huge stock of petrol cars ready for delivery and hence decided to stop production of petrol cars. Its dealers are also struggling to sell petrol cars even during the festive season. General Motors India's P Balendran has confirmed the change in production strategy.

GM launched the diesel variant of its Beat small car and it has emerged to be great car. Sales of the Beat have increased consistently but demand for the petrol variant has reduced substantially. Chevrolet dealers are offering special discounts and offers to reduce their stock of petrol cars.

The demand for diesel cars has seen a huge shift in recent months. Bookings of recently launched cars such as the Swift and Toyota Etios Liva indicate 80 per cent of the buyers are booking diesel cars. Some carmakers are preferring not to launch the petrol variants of some of their models. Volkswagen has launched only the diesel variant of its Jetta and Passat.
