Renault and Nissan, the Franco-Japanese alliance has said it has crossed a new milestone in India. The two carmakers have said they have built one lakh cars in their new plant in Oragadam, Tamil Nadu. The carmakers built this new plant near Chennai in 2008 after investing Rs.4,500 crores and operations began last year.

Speaking about this momentous occasion, Kou Kimura, CEO and MD of Renault Nissan Automotive India said: “ We started production in May last year. Between then and now we have rolled out one lakh cars from the Oragadam facility. This is the fastest roll out of one lakh cars in India." The plant build one lakh cars in 13 months.

The Oragadam plant is unique as it has the capacity to build both Renault and Nissan cars. While Nissan builds its Micra small car, Renault build its recently launched Fluence sedan.

With increasing sales of the Micra, the plant has now added a third shift to production. Mr Kimura said: “At current levels we can make 2 lakh cars a year, which we will double and work for which will start sooner as we will reach saturation levels of our existing capacity."

The Oragadam plant will be producing new models from Nissan and Renault. While Renault has said it would be launching five new models including a small car, Nissan has recently launched the Sunny sedan. Nissan has also said it intends to build light commercial vehicles from this plant.
