Volkswagen also set aside a huge sum of money to see it overtake General Motors and Toyota within 2018. Recent reports say Volkswagen is all set to overtake Toyota which until recently was the world's No. 1 carmaker in terms of sales. Volkswagen's sales in 2011 are expected to grow by 13 per cent to 8.1 million vehicles.
The reigning No.1 carmaker General Motors on the other hand will see its sales grow by 8 per cent to 7.55 million, effectively taking second spot. Toyota on the other hand which has suffered a spate of misfortunes since the past two years is expected to see its sales drop by 9 per cent to 7.27 million vehicles. Hence Volkswagen will be No.1 seven years earlier than its own prediction.

Volkswagen already has a huge presence in China and is increasing its profile in India by launching the low priced Up small car. With these markets emerging as the fastest growing markets, Volkswagen definitely can cement its spot on top of the global auto ladder.
